The inscription on the reverse of this coin is in Greek, but in a local non-Greek script, and indicates that it is ‘Of King Evagoras’. He was king by descent, claiming descent from Teucer who was the half-brother of Ajax and settled in Salamis during the Trojan war, but he was also a strategist who chose to support Athens in order to gain its help in conquering most of the island of Cyprus – as well as some cities in Phoenicia such as Tyre.
