The double-axe which Zeus holds on the reverse of this coin is the god’s symbol, which can be traced back to Tarhunt, the Hittite god of Heaven. This coin was struck during the Hecatomnid period (c. 392-330 BC), when most buildings of the national Carian sanctuary of Zeus (which dates back to the mid-seventh century BC) were erected at Labraunda, 14 kilometers from the modern town of Milas in southwestern Turkey. The temple itself was built by Idrieus (351-344 BC), but the satrap Mausolus built Andron B and the North Stoa (see P. Hellström, Labraunda. A Guide to the Karian Sanctuary of Zeus Labraundos, Istanbul 2007). Mausolos is the best-known member of his family, as his name is immortalized by his monumental tomb: the Mausoleion at Halicarnassus (Bodrum), which Antipater of Sidon described as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, some 45 meters tall, had been designed by the architects Satyrus and Pythius, and decorated with reliefs by the sculptors Bryaxis, Leochares, Scopas and Timotheus.
