This coin was struck by the son of Arcadius, Theodosius the Younger, in the name of his older sister Aelia Pulcheria (b. c. AD 398), who was not just his elder but also a powerful advisor (she was actually declared Augusta – Empress – by the Senate in AD 414 and some described her role as that of a regent). Like her sisters, she declared her wish to remain chaste, so that her marriage to Marcian likely remained unconsummated: she only wed him to legitimize his role as successor to the emperor, and she was indeed to be the daughter, sister and wife of three East Roman emperors (she also succeeded in placing her nephew, Valentinian III, on the Western throne).
