This coin was issued in AD 241 to celebrate the marriage of Gordian III – emperor since AD 238 – with Furia Sabinia Tranquillina (c. AD 225 – after AD 244), the daughter of a powerful Praefectus Praetorio (the highest office in the Imperial hierarchy, with both civilian and military functions) of Oriental-Greek origins named Timesitheus (whose successor as Praetorian Prefect was the future emperor Philip ‘the Arab’).
