This very attractive example was considered a duplicate of the coin BMC 774 (from the collection of King George III), and was exchanged in 1976 with Harlan Berk for an aureus of Galba. The Thomas provenance was noted by the British Museum, and the Trattle provenance was indicated in the Thomas catalogue.
When Commodus had become consul in AD 177, he had become the youngest consul in Roman history, and this is typical of his early life. Marcus Aurelius struck this coin in the name of his son who was only 16 or 17 years old at the time, and it is very noteworthy that he had already by then held tribunician power three times, been acclaimed imperator twice and consul once (Commodus was Caesar since the age of five). He is also named father of the state (pater patriae), though most emperors (even Nero!) did not accept this honour until much later in their careers, and/or waited to use the title (Hadrian for example had had it for eleven years before it started to appear on his coins’ legends).
