In the 460s BC, Leontinoi expelled the Syracusan tyrants that had ruled over it since 494 BC and became a democracy again – as when it was founded in 729 BC by settlers from Naxos. The local coinage changed at this time, and this new type was introduced. The local cult of Apollo had probably been inherited from the city’s founders – Naxos being famous for its sanctuary of Apollo Archegetes, ‘protector of colonies’. Whilst the grains on the reverse are an obvious reference to Demeter, the presence of a lion is less obvious, but may be a pun with the city’s name.
