The Greek colony of Massalia was founded c. 600 BC by settlers from Phocaea (Foça in Turkey). During the Second Punic War of 218-201 BC, it sided with Rome against Carthage but remained independent and commercially powerful. This changed during the Civil War of 49 BC, as the city sided against Caesar: the Romans then sieged Massalia which became a Roman city.
